This morning saw me up at the ungodly hour of 6:45 am (yes, for me that’s ungodly :P) to drop Miss Lou off at the public high school where she was joining another 35 students from both her school and the public high school embarking on a trip to Namadgi National Park for an Outward Bound course.

Basically they are split into two groups which get dumped at different locations on one end of the national park with their clothing, bedding, food, a map, a teacher and an instructor and picked up at the other end a week later after having done all sorts of rope climbs, and rock climbs and rafting and team building exercises and cooking for themselves and all sorts of “teach ‘em to be resiliant and self motivated and make responsible decisions so they become good adults type stuff”.

No mobile phones, no iPods, no video games, no facebook, no internet, no tv, no roofs, no flushing toilets and no running water. Just them and 17 other kids, two adults and their backpacks with all their supplies for the week that they have to carry between 3 and 8 km’s every day through the bush.

I had to laugh that the instructor still managed to walk back off the bus with a stack of half a dozen or so mobile phones moments before leaving after telling the kids repeatedly to make sure they didn’t have their phones with them before they even got on the bus!

I laughed harder when various parents started punching the air in obvious delight as the bus dissapeared up the road with their teen aboard….

And did I mention they are gone for a week?

Yup. A whole week.

Without showers.

Or even soap.

Cos they are roughing it and being environmentally responsible.

The best they get is a mini bottle of hand sanitiser and a travel size pack of wet wipes.

Remind me to take a peg with me when I go to pick her up.

And maybe some goggles.

And probably a carton of air freshener to get rid of the stench of filthy teen from out of my car.

K?

kthxbai.

You’;re gonna be needing the barge pole, too…..the bajillion foot long barge pole.
And maybe the roof racks on your car to tie her to.

Perhaps take a trailer and she can ride home in that, then hose her off outside when you get home.

Sounds like a fantastic camp for kids to go on. I bet they will be surprised how little they miss all their technology.
